What's been going on, where I'm playing, new ventures, and relevant articles which may be of interest to the community - it's all here. Feel free to explore, and as always, I would love to hear from you!
The Barrel Organ is the quarterly publication by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ales) in the Salisbury area, and earlier this year the journalist Will Bennet came and experienced Sing#Inn for himself! You can read the article online (p.14), or if you're local pop into a CAMRA pub and pick up a copy!
It's the middle of the summer holidays which means it's time to start getting ready for school! Or in this case, pre-school. The new programme for Wiltshire Creative Take Part is published and taking bookings NOW!
On Saturday 4th July I was delighted to be special guest creative artist for an orchestral strings day at Carlisle Cathedral organised by Cumbria Music Hub and Pick n Mix Strings. Young strings players had the chance to rehearse in a junior, senior, and combined ensembles, and we performed at the end of a long but satisfying and enjoyable day to family members and friends. Each group also performed the pieces that they themselves had created during the creative portion of the day.
Since the reorganisation of music services and subsequently hubs in the UK, a sense of community and PD opportunities can sometimes feel like distant memories to peri music teachers. It is vital to keep organisations such as the Salisbury Area Music Co-op running so that they can continue the amazing work they do in 40 or so schools in the Salisbury area. This includes, but is not limited to 1-1 instrumental lessons, small groups lessons, first access, classroom music, choirs and ensembles.
The second Sing#Inn in Salisbury took place at the glorious riverside venue in the George and Dragon last night. What a great time had by all!
With spring in the air, what better venue for a community drumming circle than outside on the historic market square? When my drums and I took to the stage earlier this week, we had no idea who was going to turn up and drum - which is half the fun! As it turned out, a fabulous group of people took to the stage to boost their mood and make music together. The diverse circle included people of varying drumming ability, ages, and backgrounds. As we entrained and reveled in our song, we simply enjoyed being our own special individual, as well as our own special community - just for that moment. Magic...
There have been so many fab acts taking to the People's Stage in Salisbury over the past couple of months, and I cannot wait for my go on Monday!
Recently, I took part in Village Music Circle drum facilitation training at Wooden Roots in Suffolk. What stood out immediately was the diversity of people involved — individuals from a wide range of backgrounds coming together through a shared interest in rhythm and connection. Being involved in the circle itself and not always leading the activity (as is a more usual position I find myself in) was a powerful reminder of how accessible and immediate music-making can be.
A resounding success for the first ever Sing#Inn, the day after St. Patrick's Day! Deacons, on Fisherton Street in Salisbury saw 30+ locals joining in harmony during vocal activities and a 3 part arrangement of Whiskey In The Jar.
I absolutely adore the chance to talk all things geek, so I relished the chance to chat with fellow educator Mimi Munro on Episode 5 of her podcast. Tune in to hear us discuss musical and pedagogical beginnings, my research into entrainment, the importance of quality musical experiences during early childhood, and what the future of music education in the UK may hold.
Why Pre-School Preludes with Asta#Plays?
